90 90 90
Garde @ 90
An exhibition of Harold's work from his 90/90/90 series.
Harold Garde – master painter and printmaker, and inventor of the strappo technique:
“Being my 90th year, I set up a challenge of 90 pieces in 90 days. Never having made a New Year’s resolution before, the challenge was both a stimulation and a celebration, and allowed me to get up each morning with a great avoidance of all other chores. Producing the art came first; bills, wash ups, answering email traveled out of their usual priority positions.
With the ninety in ninety days achieved, and with my dear friends Suzette and Brendon McAvoy, Kathie and Bill Hohns and Jennifer and Channing Coolidge visiting, the birth of the 90 90 90 was toasted and celebrated with good wine, good food and good cheer.”
‘Strappo’ is a dry acrylic image transfer technique developed, named, and taught by Harold Garde. At the beginning of 2013, Garde made a New Year’s resolution: to produce 90 strappos in 90 days for his 90th year. The result was the extraordinary collection of work, 90 90 90, which is presented on the following pages. This truly momentous feat is not only a testament to Garde’s prolific nature, but to his utter mastery of the challenging strappo technique.
On June 7th, 2013, Harold Garde celebrated his 90th birthday at the opening of the 90 90 90 exhibition at the Harbor Square Gallery in Rockland, Maine. This show and this catalogue were produced under the auspices of Tom O’Donovan, Harbor Square Gallery’s director/ curator.
The strappos in the collection range in size from 5”x7” to 15”x15” and each is mounted on archival rag paper.
